War updates from Amhara Region, Ethiopia – May 26th to June 1st, 2025

Overview


For the week of May 26th to June 1st, 2025, fighting between the Amhara Fano self-defense force (Fano) and Prosperity Party regime joint forces (regime forces) has continued in various parts of Amhara Region in Ethiopia.


  • This week battle events and rights violations were recorded in more than 46 woreda/city administrations across 11 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These zones included the Wag-Hemra, North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, North Gojjam, South Gonder, Central Gonder and West Gonder Zones. Developments were also recorded in East Wollega Zone of Oromia Region and in Addis-Ababa city.


  • Civilian casualties were recorded in 12 woreda/city administrations across 7 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Raya-Kobo, Wadla, Habru, Wogdi, Mehal-Sayint, Minjar-Shenkora, Awabel, Jawi, Estie, Farta, Chilga and Tegede Woredas in North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, Awi, South Gonder and Central Gonder Zones. An attack in Chilga Woreda of Central Gonder Zone involved regime-backed Qemant militants.


  • Widespread arrests were recorded in Raya-Kobo, Habru and Mehal-Sayint Woredas of North Wollo and South Wollo Zones in Amhara Region. Abductions were recorded in Kobo city and Chilga Woreda of North Wollo and Central Gonder Zones in Amhara Region. Abductions were also recorded in East Wollega Zone of Oromia Region.


  • In Alamata city of North Wollo Zone, militants affiliated to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) have reportedly begun efforts to forcibly reopen public institutions and administrative structures.
