War updates from Amhara Region, Ethiopia – May 25th to 31st, 2026

Overview


For the week of May 25th to 31st, 2026, fighting between the Amhara Fano self-defense force (Fano) and Oromo Prosperity Party regime joint forces (regime forces) has continued in various parts of Amhara Region in Ethiopia.


  • This week battle events and rights violations were recorded in more than 39 woreda/city administrations across 11 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These zones included North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, North Gojjam, South Gonder, Central Gonder, West Gonder and North Gonder Zones. Developments were also recorded in North Shewa Zone of Oromia Region.


  • Civilian casualties were recorded in 4 woreda/city administrations across 3 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Kewet, Enarj-Enawga, Goncha-Siso-Enese and Gonder Woredas in North Shewa, East Gojjam, and Central Gonder Zones. Additional casualties were recorded in Were-Jarso Woreda of North Shewa Zone and Kiremu Woreda of East Wollega Zone in Oromia Region.


  • This week drone activity was recorded in Debre-Birhan City and other parts of North Shewa Zone in Amhara Region.


  • Arrests and/or abductions were recorded in Woldia, Ambassel and Efratana-Gidim Woredas and Debre-Markos City in North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa and East Gojjam Zones of Amhara Region. Abductions were also recorded in Were-Jarso Woreda of North Shewa Zone in Oromia Region.


  • This week tensions a comprehensive five-day road closure and transportation blockade took effect on May 29th across the region.3 The announcement was made by Fano forces in parallel to region-wide military operations related to enforcing a previous declaration prohibiting elections from proceeding amidst war and insecurity.
