Overview
For the week of August 5th to 11th, 2024, fighting between Amhara Fano freedom fighters (Fano) and Prosperity Party regime joint forces (regime joint forces) has continued in various parts of Amhara Region in Ethiopia. Summary updates are provided below.
Intense fighting has been recorded in North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, North Gojjam, West Gojjam, East Gojjam, Awi, North Gonder, Central Gonder, and South Gonder Zones of Amhara Region.
Fano forces have continued military operations in major urban areas including Bahir-Dar, Debre-Markos, and Gonder cities.
Regime forces have continued to target unarmed civilians in attacks and abductions including family members of suspected Fano members who are held hostage.
On August 7th, Oromo militants from the Oromo Special Zone (Amhara Region) attacked Amhara farmers in Kewot Woreda.
On August 8th, a public transportation vehicle plunged into a ravine following heavy artillery shelling from regime forces in Hulet-Eju-Enese Woreda (East Gojjam Zone, Amhara Region).
The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has continued resettling militants under the cover of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in East Telemt, West Telemt and Mai-Temri Woredas (North Gonder Zone, Amhara Region).
In Dera Woreda of North Shewa Zone (Oromia Region), Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) militants have continued abductions targeting civilians in Gundo-Meskel town.
On August 9th, Oromia Region Special Forces (OSF) attacked Amhara residents in Abe-Dongoro Woreda of Horo Guduru Wollega Zone (Oromia Region). In addition, IDPs forcibly relocated to Oromia Region several months ago are being redisplaced to Debre-Birhan city (North Shewa Zone, Amhara Region) due to ongoing security concerns.
