Oromo Prosperity Party regime soldiers carried out a series of arbitrary arrests targeting academics, religious figures and youths in Gonder City

The Amhara Association of America (AAA) has learned that on June 7, 2026 Oromo Prosperity Party regime soldiers (regime forces) carried out a series of arbitrary arrests targeting academics, religious figures and youths in Gonder City (Gonder Zone, Amhara Region, Ethiopia). 

That day regime forces arrested Ato Zemene Habtu, Dean of the College of Health Science at Gonder University's Tseda campus. Ato Zemene, who serves as a board member for the civic organization “Synergy for Social Change,” was detained in response to social media posts in which he denounced targeted violence and killings of followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, attributing the attacks to extremists and accusing the state of complicity. As of June 8^th, he was being held at the Gonder City Third Police Station. Authorities also arrested numerous local youths alongside him.

On the same day, regime forces detained Merigetta Betremaryam Abebaw, a prominent religious scholar, author, and educator. Merigetta Betremaryam, who had paused his master’s degree studies at Gonder University to focus on religious teaching, was targeted for alleged social media commentary questioning the lack of protection for religious communities. As of June 8^th, he was being held at the First Police Station in the Bulko neighborhood.

የአማራ ማህበር በአሜሪካ፤ የኦሮሞ ብልጽግና ፓርቲ አገዛዝ ወታደሮች (የአገዛዙ ኃይሎች) በጎንደር ከተማ (በማእከላዊ ጎንደር ዞን፣ አማራ ክልል፣ ኢትዮጵያ) በምሁራን፣ በሃይማኖት አባቶች እና በወጣቶች ላይ ያነጣጠረ ተከታታይ የዘፈቀደ እስራቶችን ማካሄዳቸውን አረጋግጧል።

በግንቦት 30 ቀን 2018 ዓ.ም. የአገዛዙ ኃይሎች በጎንደር ዩኒቨርሲቲ የፀዳ ግቢ የጤና ሳይንስ ኮሌጅ ዲን የሆኑትን አቶ ዘመነ ሀብቱን አስረዋል። «ሲነርጂ ፎር ሶሻል ቼንጅ» (Synergy for Social Change) ለተባለው የሲቪክ ማህበር በቦርድ አባልነት የሚያገለግሉት አቶ ዘመነ የታሰሩት፣ በኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ተዋህዶ ቤተክርስቲያን ተከታዮች ላይ የሚፈጸመውን ተደጋጋሚ ጥቃትና ግድያ በጽኑ ያወገዙበትን፣ እንዲሁም ጥቃቶቹን አክራሪዎች እንደፈጸሙት በመግለጽ መንግስትን በተባባሪነት የወቀሱበትን የማህበራዊ ሚዲያ መልዕክቶች ተከትሎ ነው። በጎንደር ከተማ ሶስተኛ ፖሊስ ጣቢያ ታስረው የሚገኙ ሲሆን፣ ባለስልጣናቱ ከእሳቸው ጋር በርካታ የአካባቢውን ወጣቶችም አብረው አስረዋል።

በተመሳሳይ ዕለት የአገዛዙ ኃይሎች ታዋቂ የሃይማኖት ሊቅ፣ ደራሲ እና መምህር የሆኑትን መርጌታ በትረማርያም አበባውን አብረው አፍነዋል። በቤተክርስቲያን መምህርነታቸው ላይ ትኩረት ለማድረግ ሲሉ በጎንደር ዩኒቨርሲቲ የነበራቸውን የማስተርስ ዲግሪ ትምህርት አቋርጠው የነበሩት መርጌታ በትረማርያም፤ የታሰሩት በኦርቶዶክስ ምዕመናን ላይ የሚደረገው የማያባራ ስደትና መከራ ያወገዙበትንና በአገዛዙ በኩል የሚገባውን ጥበቃ ማነስን የተቹበትን የማህበራዊ ሚዲያ አስተያየት ምክንያት በማድረግ ነው። በቡልኮ ሰፈር በሚገኘው አንደኛ ፖሊስ ጣቢያ ታስረው ይገኛሉ።
