War updates from Amhara Region, Ethiopia – July 20th to 26th, 2026

Overview
For the week of July 20th to 26th, 2026, fighting between the Amhara Fano self-defense force (Fano) and Oromo Prosperity Party regime joint forces (regime forces) has continued in various parts of Amhara Region in Ethiopia.
This week battle events and rights violations were recorded in more than 21 woreda/city administrations across 7 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These zones included North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, North Gojjam, and North Gonder. Developments were also recorded in East Wollega and Horo-Guduru-Wollega Zones of Oromia Region.
Civilian casualties were recorded in 7 woreda/city administrations across 3 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Raya-Kobo, Enarj-Enawga, Machakel, Bibugn, Sinan, Debay-Telatgin and Janamora Woredas of North Wollo, East Gojjam and North Gonder Zones.
Arrests/abductions were recorded in Raya-Alamata and Goncha-Siso-Enese Woredas of North Wollo and East Gojjam Zones in Amhara Region. The abduction was carried out by Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces.
This week drone activity was recorded in Borena-Sayint Woreda of South Wollo Zone in Amhara Region. The incident involved a deadly attack on a monastery affiliated with the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) which resulted in civilian casualties (nuns).
This week, the Ethiopian Human Rights Council (EHRCO) issued a new report detailing recent trends of human rights violations in East Arsi Zone of Oromia Region.
