Canadian MP Gord Johns tables petition in Parliament calling for targeted sanctions over human rights violations in Ethiopia’s Amhara Region
⚡️️️️️️️ℹ️ #UPDATE: Important announcement regarding e-petition 7556 which received significant support among members of the Ethiopian-Canadian community and allies. On November 3, 2026 MP Gord Johns (NDP) tabled the e-petition in front of the House of Commons in Ottawa, Canada.

"Mr. Speaker, it is an honour to table e-petition 7556. The petitioners highlight that, since early 2023, armed conflict in the Amhara region of Ethiopia has involved Ethiopian government forces carrying out indiscriminate violence and sexual gender-based violence against civilian populations and infrastructure, including through the use of aerial strikes, leaving more than 4.4 million children out of school and hundreds of thousands displaced.
The petitioners also highlight that the Ethiopian government has carried out the arbitrary detentions and torture of Amhara journalists, civilian society leaders, members of Parliament and opposition figures. They highlight that the incumbent Prosperity Party administration won 90% of federal Parliament seats in the June 2026 general election despite ongoing armed conflicts, mass civilian displacement, suppression of civilian society and opposition, and the exclusion of major ethnic communities, making conditions for a free and inclusive vote impossible.
The petitioners note that Canada provides over $147 million in development assistance to Ethiopia and maintains significant diplomatic, commercial and humanitarian interests in the country and the Horn of Africa. They are calling on the government to consider the application of the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act to oppose targeted sanctions on individuals credibly identified as responsible for grave human rights violations in Ethiopia. They publicly demand an immediate ceasefire in the Amhara region and the unconditional release of all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience held by the Ethiopian government.
Lastly, the petitioners call on the Government of Ethiopia for strengthened transparency around the June 2026 general election results toward an inclusive democratic process.”

የፓርላማ አባል ጆንስ ያደረጉትን ንግግር ሙሉ ጽሑፍ ከዚህ በታች ያንብቡ:
“አፈ ጉባኤ፣ ኢ-ፔቲሽን 7556ን በማቅረቤ ታላቅ ክብር ይሰማኛል። አቤቱታ አቅራቢዎቹ እንደሚያስረዱት፣ ከ2015 መጀመሪያ ጀምሮ በኢትዮጵያ በአማራ ክልል ውስጥ እየተካሔደ ባለው የጦርነት ግጭት የኢትዮጵያ መንግሥት ኃይሎች በንፁሀን ሕዝብ እና መሠረተ ልማቶች ላይ የአየር ጥቃቶችን ጨምሮ ያለአንዳች ልዩነት ጥቃት እና ጾታን መሠረት ያደረገ ጾታዊ ጥቃቶችን ፈጽመዋል፤ ይህም ከ4.4 ሚሊዮን በላይ ሕፃናትን ከትምህርት ገበታ ውጪ ያደረገ ከመሆኑም በላይ በመቶ ሺዎች የሚቆጠሩትን ደግሞ አፈናቅሏል።
በተጨማሪም አቤቱታ አቅራቢዎቹ የኢትዮጵያ መንግሥት በአማራ ጋዜጠኞች፣ በማኅበረሰብ መሪዎች፣ በፓርላማ አባላት እና በተቃዋሚ ግለሰቦች ላይ ያለአግባብ እስራት እና እንግልት መፈጸሙን አጉልተው አሳይተዋል። እየቀጠለ ባለው የትጥቅ ግጭት፣ የንፁሀን የጅምላ መፈናቀል፣ የሲቪል ማኅበረሰብ እና የተቃዋሚዎች ጭቆና እንዲሁም ዋና ዋና የብሔር ማህበረሰቦች መገለል ባሉበት ሁኔታ ነፃ እና አሳታፊ የምርጫ ሁኔታዎችን መፍጠር የማይቻል ቢሆንም፣ አሁን ያለው የብልጽግና ፓርቲ አስተዳደር በሰኔ 2018 በተካሔደው ምርጫ 90% የፌደራል ፓርላማ ወንበሮችን ማሸነፉን ገልጿዋል።
አቤቱታ አቅራቢዎቹ ካናዳ ለኢትዮጵያ ከ147 ሚሊዮን ዶላር በላይ የልማት እርዳታ እንደምትሰጥ እና አገሪቷ በኢትዮጵያ እና በምስራቅ አፍሪካ (የአፍሪካ ቀንድ) ከፍተኛ ዲፕሎማሲያዊ፣ ንግድ እና ሰብዓዊ ጥቅሞች እንዳሏት ጠቅሰዋል። በመሆኑም መንግሥት በኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ለከባድ የሰብዓዊ መብቶች ጥሰት ተጠያቂ በሆኑ ግለሰቦች ላይ ኢላማ ያደረጉ ማዕቀቦችን ለመጣል ‘የሙስና የውጭ ባለሥልጣናት ሰለባዎች የፍትሕ ሕግ’ (Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act) ተግባራዊነትን እንዲያሰብበት ይጠይቃሉ። በአማራ ክልል አፋጣኝ የተኩስ ማቆም እንዲደረግ እና በኢትዮጵያ መንግሥት የታሰሩ ሁሉም የፖለቲካ እስረኞች እና የሕሊና እስረኞች ያለምንም ቅድመ ሁኔታ እንዲፈቱ በግልጽ ይጠይቃሉ።
በመጨረሻም አቤቱታ አቅራቢዎቹ አሳታፊ የዲሞክራሲ ሥርዓት እንዲኖር የኢትዮጵያ መንግሥት የሰኔ 2026 የሕዝብ ተወካዮች ምርጫ ውጤትን ግልጽነት እንዲያጠናክር ይጠይቃሉ።”
