Overview 


Between July 1st and 31st, 2025, Amhara War Updates (AWU) recorded battle events and human rights incidents across 104 distinct woreda/city administrations in 18 zonal administrations in 4 regions (Amhara, Oromia, Central Ethiopia and Addis-Ababa city). 


The month of July marked intense fighting with significant military casualties and shifting control in several strategic areas. This month was marked by large-scale military operations both from the Amhara Fano self-defense force (Fano) and the Oromo Prosperity Party (OPP) regime's joint armed forces. 


Over the reporting period, AWU reported 213 battle events across 92 woreda/city administrations in 15 zonal administrations across 2 regions (Amhara and Oromia) resulting in 5,284 regime casualties and 121 Fano casualties.

Over the reporting period, AWU reported 55 human rights incidents across 40 woreda/city administrations in 15 zonal administrations across 4 regions (Amhara, Oromia, Central Ethiopia and Addis-Ababa city) resulting in: 

  • 149 civilians killed; 

  • 96 civilians injured; 

  • 15 abductions and 

  • 357 arrests.

While the majority of human rights incidents implicated OPP regime forces, other perpetrators included the Oromia Region Special Forces, “Erpe” militants, Qeerro, Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces and unidentified militants.
