Journalist Salsawit Baynesagn was taken into custody by police over one week ago according to family members who spoke to Deutsche Welle. The journalist’s younger sister told Deutsche Welle her sister was detained by police last Monday, June 8, 2026 (Sene 1, 2018 E.C.) afternoon from her residence in Addis Ababa. The police said she was wanted for questioning during the arrest. Since then, she has not been brought before court.

Journalist Salsawit Baynesagn was detained by police over one week ago according to the journalist’s younger sister Haymanot Baynesagn who spoke to Deutsche Welle today. Her sister said she was told by phone that last Monday, June 8, 2026 (Sene 1, 2018 E.C.) afternoon she (Salsawit) was taken from her residence in Addis Ababa by police who said she was wanted for questioning.

Initially journalist Salsawit was taken along with her house maid however her maid was released on the second day she said. According to Haymanot, during the first two days, June 8 and 9 (Sene 1 and 2) [Monday and Tuesday] journalist Salsawit was being held in a temporary detention facility, however she was later taken to the third police station (a regular detention facility) in the Piassa Giyorgis area. Her family members were unable to visit her in person until after the two-day period.

The reason for the journalist’s arrest has yet to be clarified says Haymanot, however she suspected her court filing was likely related to the recent killings of Christians in Arsi.

Journalist Salsawit was detained leaving behind her four-year-old child and has not been brought before a court even one week later says her younger sister. According to Haymanot they have not received any official response regarding the reason for her arrest, nor has she been brought before a court, and she asked relevant authorities to give justice to her sister journalist Salsawit Baynesagn.

Ethiopian journalist Salsawit Baynesagn had worked as a journalist for Walta and Fana Broadcasting Corporation, and recently she was known for sharing her views on her personal social media pages on TikTok and Facebook. Deutsche Welle’s efforts to contact police regarding the matter were not successful.
