As a result of the recent drought, more than 12,000 students have been forced to suspend their schooling in Jan Amora Woreda of North Gonder Zone in Amhara Region.

The Woreda Administration representative and Education Office Head Ato Habtamu Hailu in his interview with VOA today (Thursday) said of the more than 17,000 students in schools across 38 kebeles of the woreda, only 5,000 are attending classes.

Ato Habtamu explained the source of the problem is the drought that has transpired in the area and which has resulted in parents being unable to provide the necessary school materials for their children.

Parents of children said they did not want their children traversing long journeys to their school on an empty stomach. As a result of hunger, students living far distances from their educational institutions are being forced to migrate.

The Regional Emergency Prevention and Food Security Commission reported being unable to deliver grain to those in need as a result of the ongoing security situation.
