The displaced person explains there is nothing to eat or drink, saying the problems are multifold, they recalled that 4 years ago they used to live in “Alem Seye” Kebele of “Gudu Soyo” Woreda of East Wollega Zone, and they said when they left they only had the clothing they were wearing but they were unable to change it and are currently facing problems along with their family members.
Displaced persons in an area called “May Gulit” near Sekota city of Wag Hemra Zone of Amhara Region have been exposed to numerous issues. The zonal emergency prevention and food security office says though there are no problems with food provision, it is working to resolve problems associated with medicine and other issues.
Persons displaced over 4 years ago due to identity-based conflict in various zones of Wollega in Oromia Region and taking refuge near an area called “May Gulit” near Sekota city of Wag Hemra Zone in Amhara Region are facing shortages in food, medicines and shelter.
The displaced persons say they have been living together in an unfinished construction area suffering from cold, winds and rains, facing numerous problems. Among the displaced persons was one who explained they are facing numerous problems.
Displaced persons say “we have been exposed to various problems”
The displaced person explains there is nothing to eat or drink, saying the problems are multi-fold, they recalled that 4 years ago they used to live in “Alem Seye” Kebele of “Gudu Soyo” Woreda of East Wollega Zone, and they said when they left they only had the clothing they were wearing but they were unable to change it and are currently facing problems along with their family members. They have called for help describing the food shortage as severe. The displaced person says more than 5,300 displaced persons are currently encamped in the May Gulit area.
Another displaced person on their end said they left their home in the Wollega area where they had lived for more than 40 years and are currently facing problems with clothing and food. Outside of support provided from local residents they said they have not received food relief from the state. Another displaced person says youth up to elderly persons are sitting idle unable to work as there are no day work activities available in the area. Persons with six or seven family members have been unable to live, and it has been months since they received grain assistance they said. According to the source, they had last received assistance last Ginbot (between May 9th to June 7th, 2025) or Sene (between June 8th to July 7th, 2025).
The Amhara Region Wag Hemra Zone Emergency Prevention and Food Security Office head Ato Mihret Melaku on his end said there are over 2,000 persons displaced from Oromia Region who will continue to receive assistance until they are repatriated to where they came from, as the security situation improves.
The Wag Hemra Emergency Prevention says “there is no food provision problem”
Ato Mihret said “there is no problem with provision of food assistance” and that his office is discussing provision of medicine with partners. Regarding shelter though there is surely a problem displaced persons are expected to integrate with local communities in order to live. He explained that shelters have stopped being provided for displaced persons because non-displaced persons have entered shelters demanding undue benefits which must be prevented. More than 640,000 residents have been displaced from their homes to Amhara Region due to security problems in various regions.
