War updates from Amhara Region, Ethiopia – April 13th to 19th, 2026

Overview


For the week of April 13th to 19th, 2026, fighting between the Amhara Fano self-defense force (Fano) and Oromo Prosperity Party regime joint forces (regime forces) has continued in various parts of Amhara Region in Ethiopia.


  • This week battle events and rights violations were recorded in more than 21 woreda/city administrations across 9 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These zones included Wag-Hemra, North Wollo, South Wollo, Kemise, North Shewa, East Gojjam, Bahir-Dar, South Gonder and Central Gonder Zones. In Kemise Zone Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) militants reportedly took control of Bati Woreda with support from regime forces. Developments were also recorded in East Wollega Zone of Oromia Region and in Addis-Ababa City.


  • Civilian casualties were recorded in 8 woreda/city administrations across 6 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Raya-Kobo, Woldia, Borena, Tarmaber, Hulet-Eju-Enese, Sedie, Shebel-Berenta, and Lay-Gayint Woredas in North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam and South Gonder Zones and Bahir-Dar City.


  • Mass arrests were recorded in Addis-Ababa City. Over one hundred youths were detained under terrorism charges under accusation of listening to newly released music by prominent artist Teddy Afro.


  • Drone activity was recorded in Raya-Kobo, Basona-Werana and Aneded Woredas of North Wollo, North Shewa and East Gojjam Zones. Drone activity was also recorded in Kiremu and Gudaya-Bila Woredas of East Wollega Zone in Oromia Region.


  • This week, regime forces reportedly intensified efforts to coerce residents across Amhara Region to register voting identification cards for upcoming national elections. Reports indicated regime forces also confiscated documentation as part of voter fraud operations.
