Urgent Update – October 12, 2026 (Tikimit 2, 2019 EC)

The Amhara Association of America (AAA) is concerned over ongoing life-threatening conditions faced by Dr. Wondwossen Assefa and other Amhara prisoners of conscience in illegal detention in Addis-Ababa City, Ethiopia.

In a recent update, AAA reported harsh and inhumane detention circumstances of over 23 out of 29 high-profile Amhara prisoners of conscience transferred to various facilities across Kilinto, Kaliti, and Aba-Samuel Prisons in Addis-Ababa City. In the case of Dr. Wondwossen Assefa, AAA reported Dr. Assefa was being held in punitive solitary confinement in Zone 6 of Kilinto Prison under life-threatening conditions. According to the latest information received by AAA, Dr. Assefa has continued to face life-threatening conditions over the last 16 days. The solitary confinement space was described as a cramped metallic space, reeking of a nauseating foul odor, filled with rodents and insects – where he has been prohibited from visitation by family members. These extreme detention conditions have worsened Dr. Assefa’s preexisting health conditions including asthma and hypertension for which he took medication. Past appeals to transfer Dr. Assefa to more humane detention circumstances were also unsuccessful, effectively prolonging his exposure to life-threatening conditions.

AAA continues to call for the immediate and unconditional release of all persons detained for their ethnic Amhara identity and/or political beliefs. Advocacy groups have also continued to call for independent verification of conditions of political prisoners, access to adequate medical care and humane detention conditions, contact with family and legal representatives, and clarification from relevant authorities regarding the reason and legal basis for transfers.
