Over twenty-nine high-profile Amhara prisoners of conscience are facing life-threatening conditions amid heightened health and safety concerns while in illegal detention in Ethiopia

The Amhara Association of America (AAA) has learned that over twenty-nine high-profile Amhara prisoners of conscience are facing life-threatening conditions amid heightened health and safety concerns while in illegal detention in Ethiopia.
According to information received by AAA, since the evening of September 25, 2026 seven of the twenty-nine detainees were transported to undisclosed locations. The targeted transfer is believed to be tied to previous attempts of coercive self-incrimination by Berhanu Adelo, Chief Commissioner of the state-funded Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC), acting on behalf of the ruling Oromo Prosperity Party regime. Among the seven detainees is Dr. Wondwossen Assefa who was transferred from Kaliti Prison to Kilinto Prison as of September 26, 2026. Dr. Assefa was initially separated from the other detainees and placed in an area called “Zone 6” which is used for military personnel implicated in serious criminal cases. Dr. Assefa was placed in a cramped detention cell and has experienced a serious deterioration in his health amid preexisting health concerns including chronic pain. The transfer was conducted under “orders from above” attributed to an official identified as Commissioner Teklu (last name unknown).
Advocacy groups have called for independent verification of his condition, immediate access to adequate medical care and humane detention conditions, contact with family and legal representatives, and clarification from relevant authorities regarding the reason and legal basis for his transfer and detention conditions.

የአማራ ማኅበር በአሜሪካ በኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ በሕገ-ወጥ እስር ላይ የሚገኙት ሃያ ዘጠኝ የኅሊና እስረኞች በከፍተኛ የጤና እና የደህንነት ስጋት ምክንያት ለሕይወታቸው በሚያሰጋ ሁኔታ ውስጥ እንደሚገኙ ተረድቷል።
ማኅበሩ ባገኘው መረጃ መሠረት፣ ከሃያ ዘጠኙ ታሳሪዎች መካከል ሰባቱ ከመስከረም 15 ቀን 2019 ዓ.ም. ምሽት ጀምሮ ወዳልታወቀ ስፍራ ተወስደዋል። ይኽ ዝውውር፣ ገዢው የኦሮሞ ብልጽግና ፓርቲ አገዛዝን በመወከል በመንግሥት በጀት ተመድቦለት በሚንቀሳቀሰው የኢትዮጵያ ሰብአዊ መብቶች ኮሚሽን (ኢሰመኮ) ዋና ኮሚሽነር ብርሃኑ አዴሎ አማካኝነት የተፈጸመው፣ በግዳጅ በራስ ላይ የመመስከር ጥረቶች ጋር የተያያዘ እንደሆነ ይታመናል። ከሰባቱ ታሳሪዎች መካከል ዶክተር ወንድወሰን አሰፋ አንዱ ሲሆኑ፣ ከመስከረም 16 ቀን 2019 ዓ.ም. ጀምሮ ከቃሊቲ ማረሚያ ቤት ወደ ቂሊንጦ ማረሚያ ቤት ተዘዋውረዋል። ዶክተር ወንድወሰን መጀመሪያ ላይ ከሌሎች ታሳሪዎች ተለይተው በከባድ የወንጀል ጉዳዮች የተጠረጠሩ የጦር ኃይል አባላት በሚታሰሩበት "ዞን 6" በሚባል ቦታ ተመድበው ነበር። ዶክተር ወንድወሰን በጠባብ የእስር ክፍል ውስጥ የታሰሩ ሲሆን፣ ቀደም ሲል ከነበረባቸው ከፍተኛ ሕመምና የጤና ችግሮች በተጨማሪ፣ በአሁኑ ሰዓት የታሰሩበት ሁኔታ የጤና ሁኔታቸውን በከፍተኛ ሁኔታ እያበላሸው ይገኛል። ዝውውሩ የተፈጸመው ኮሚሽነር ተክሉ (የአባት ስማቸው ያልታወቀ) ከተባሉ ባለስልጣን በተሰጠ "ከላይ የመጣ ትእዛዝ" መሆኑ ተገልጿል።
የመብት ተሟጋች ቡድኖች፣ የታሳሪው የጤና ሁኔታ በገለልተኛ አካል እንዲረጋገጥ፣ አፋጣኝ እና በቂ ሕክምና እንዲያገኙ፣ ሰብአዊነት ያለው የእስር ሁኔታ እንዲመቻችላቸው፣ ከቤተሰብ እና ከሕግ ተወካዮቻቸው ጋር እንዲገናኙ፣ እንዲሁም ለዝውውራቸው እና የእስር ሁኔታቸው ምክንያት እና ሕጋዊ መሠረት በሚመለከታቸው አካላት ማብራሪያ እንዲሰጥ ጠይቀዋል።
