Remarks from AAA Chairman at Virtual Candlelight Vigil Event

"Good evening everyone and thank you all for being here tonight, we gather here today across the globe to honor the memory of countless innocent lives lost to genocide and persecution against Amhara people. Your presence today is a testament to our shared commitment to justice, truth and peace. 

The story of the Amhara people suffering is long and painful, it began decades ago under the Derg regime which unleashed waves of terror and systematic oppression. Later the Tigray People's Liberation Front or TPLF during its years in power continued policies that marginalized and targeted Amhara people through implementation of the ethnic apartheid system. The Oromo Liberation Front added its own chapter of violence and continues to this day. And today under the Oromo Prosperity Party led by Abiy Ahmed the persecution has reached an alarming level. Tens of thousands of Amhara have been killed and millions displaced. These are not isolated incidents, they are systematic patterns of hatred and impunity that must end. 

This month November marks the anniversary of one of the darkest days in recent memory, the Mai Kadra massacre, in which over 2,000 Amhara were massacred in a single day by the Tigray People's Liberation Front simply because of their ethnic identity. Families were shattered, communities destroyed and yet justice remains elusive. Tonight we remember the lives of all Amhara that have been lost across decades and the millions that have been displaced. Displaced from their homes and their communities shattered across all of Ethiopia. And we reaffirm that their memory will not fade into silence. 

Over the past two years of war on the Amhara people our organization the Amhara Association of America has documented nearly twenty thousand victims, and that is only what we have documented, the actual number is many times that. And at least two hundred drone attacks resulting in thousands of deaths. Children have not been immune to this violence with nearly five million children lacking access to education. And over 800 schools have been converted into military outposts by the Abiy regime. 

This candlelight vigil symbolizes both mourning and resolve. We mourn the victims, the innocent Amhara victims, but we also commit ourselves to a future where no one is targeted for their identity. We call for truth, accountability and an end to impunity. Let us stand united against hate and violence, and let our voice be a beacon of hope for generations to come. And also may their memory (of our people) guide us to justice and peace. Our people have a strong tradition of justice and peace but we also have a strong tradition of standing up against persecution and violence, and that's what our people have been doing for the past two and a half years. Let's not let tonight's candlelight vigil be just about mourning but also a remembrance of what we are - a resilient people, a people who have stood up against hate, against violence, and always coming out of that a much stronger people. So let us be focused on that because what our people are doing right now back home in Ethiopia is standing up against the Abiy regime to free our people from this violence and for justice.

"ደህና አመሻችሁ? ሁላችሁም በዚህ ስለተገኛችሁ አመሰግናለሁ። ዛሬ በመላው ዓለም ተሰባስበን በአማራ ተወላጆች ላይ በደረሰው የዘር ማጥፋት እና በደል ሕይወታቸውን ያጡ ንፁሀን ዜጎችን ለማስታወስ ነው። መገኘታችሁ ለፍትህ፣ ለእውነት እና ለሰላም ያለንን የጋራ ቁርጠኝነት የሚያሳይ ነው።

የአማራ ሕዝብ የመከራና ስቃይ ታሪክ የጀመረው ከአሥርተ ዓመታት በፊት የደርግ ሥርዓት በዘረጋው የሽብር ማዕበልና ሥርዓታዊ ጭቆና ነው። በመቀጠል የትግራይ ሕዝብ ነጻ አውጪ ግንባር (ትሕነግ) በስልጣን ላይ በቆየባቸው ዓመታት የብሄሔር አፓርታይድ ስርዓትን ተግባራዊ በማድረግ በአማራን ሕዝብ ላይ ያነጣጠሩ እና አማራን ያገለሉ ፖሊሲዎች ቀጥለውበታል። የኦሮሞ ነጻነት ግንባር የራሱን የበደል ምዕራፍ በመጨመር ጥቃቱን ቀጥሏል። ዛሬም በአብይ አህመድ በሚመራው በኦሮሞ ብልፅግና ፓርቲ በደሉ ተባብሶ አሳሳቢ ደረጃ ላይ ደርሷል። በአስር ሺዎች የሚቆጠሩ አማራዎች ተገድለዋል፤ ሚሊዮኖችም ተፈናቅለዋል። እነዚህ የተለዩ ክስተቶች ሳይሆኑ ተደጋጋሚ የሆኑ ስልታዊ የጥላቻ እና የማን አለባኝነት ዘይቤዎች ናቸው።

ይህ የኅዳር ወር ከ2000 በላይ የሚሆኑ አማራዎች በብሔራቸው ምክንያት በሕዝባዊ ወያነ ሓርነት ትግራይ በአንድ ቀን የተጨፈጨፉበትን የማይ ካድራ እልቂት የምናስባበት ነው። ቤተሰቦች ተበትነዋል፣ ማህበረሰቦች ጠፍተዋል፣ ፍትህ ግን አሁንም አልተገኘም። ዛሬ ምሽት ከአስርት ዓመታት ጀምሮ የጠፉትን እና ለመፈናቀል የተዳረጉትን የሚሊዮን አማራዎች ሕይወት እናስታውሳለን። ትውስታቸው በዝምታ እንደማይጠፋ እናረጋግጣለን።

ድርጅታችን የአማራ ማህበር አሜሪካ ባለፉት ሁለት ዓመታት በአማራ ላይ በተካሄደው ጦርነት ወደ ሃያ ሺህ የሚጠጉ ተጎጂዎችን መዝግቧል። ነገር ግን ይህ ቁጥር የመዘገብነው ብቻ ነው። ትክክለኛው ቁጥሩ በብዙ እጥፍ ይበልጣል። ቢያንስ ሁለት መቶ የሰው አልባ አውሮፕላን ጥቃቶች ተደርገው በሺዎች የሚቆጠሩ ሰዎችን ተገድለዋል። አምስት ሚሊዮን የሚጠጉ ህጻናት ከትምህርት ገበታ ውጪ ሆነዋል። ከ800 በላይ ትምህርት ቤቶች በአብይ አገዛዝ ወደ ወታደራዊ ካምፕነት ተቀይረዋል።

ይህ የሻማ ማብራት ዝግጅት ኀዘንን እና ቁርጠኝነትን ያመለክታል። ንፁሀን የአማራ ተጎጂዎች እናዝናለን፣ ነገር ግን ማንም በማንነቱ የማይጠቃበት ነገን ለመስራት ቁርጠኝነታችንን እንገልፃለን። እውነትና ተጠያቂነት እንዲሰፍን፤ ማንአለብኝነት እንዲቆም እንጠይቃለን። ጥላቻና እና ጥቃትን ለመከላከል በጋራ እንቁም፤ ድምጻችንም ለትውልድ የተስፋ ብርሃን ይሁን። መታሰቢያቸው ወደ ፍትህ እና ሰላም ይምራን። ሕዝባችን ለረዥም ዘመን የቆየ የፍትህና የሰላም ባህል ያለው ቢሆንም በደልንና ጥቃትን የመታገል ጠንካራ ባህልም አለው፤ ለአለፉት ሁለት ዓመታት ሲያደርግ የነበረው ይህንን ነው። የዛሬው የሻማ ማብራት ምሽት ለቅሶ ብቻ ሳይሆን ጥላቻንና ጥቃትን እምቢ የሚል ጽኑ ህዝብ፣ በመከራ ሁሉ አሸናፊ ሆኖ የሚወጣ ጠንካራ ሕዝብ እንደሆንን ማስታወሻ ይሁን። በአሁኑ ሰዓት በኢትዮጵያ ያለው ሕዝባችን የአብይን አገዛዝ እምቢ ብሎ ሕዝባችንን ነጻ ለማውጣትና ለፍትህ የሚያደርገው ትግል ላይ እናተኩር። አመሰግናለሁ።”

የአማራ ማኅበር በአሜሪካ ሊቀ መንበር ቴዎድሮስ ትርፌ ኅዳር 6 ቀን 2018 ዓ. ም. የአማራ ማኅበራት ኅብረት በሰሜን አሜሪካ ከአማራ ብዙኃን መገናኛ ድርጅት ጋር በጥምረት ባዘጋጀው የድረ ገፅ የሻማ ማብራት ዝግጅት ላይ ካደረጉት ንግግር የተወሰደ።
