War updates from Amhara Region, Ethiopia – March 2nd to 8th, 2026

Overview


For the week of March 2nd to 8th, 2026, 2026, fighting between the Amhara Fano self-defense force (Fano) and Oromo Prosperity Party regime joint forces (regime forces) has continued in various parts of Amhara Region in Ethiopia.


  • This week battle events and rights violations were recorded in more than 30 woreda/city administrations across 9 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These zones included North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, North Gojjam, Central Gonder and Welkait-Tegede-Setit Humera Zones. Developments were also recorded in East Wollega and Horo-Guduru-Wollega Zones of Oromia Region and in Addis-Ababa City.


  • Civilian casualties were recorded in 7 woreda/city administrations across 4 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Delanta, Ambassel, Mehal-Sayint, Antsokiyana-Gemza, Enemay, Shebel-Berenta and Gonder Woredas in South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam and Central Gonder Zones. In Mehal-Sayint Woreda, regime forces carried out indiscriminate shelling targeting the historic Atronsa-Maryam Monastery (a nationally recognized heritage site) resulting in casualties. Casualties were also recorded in Abe-Dongoro and Gida-Ayana Woredas of East Wollega and Horo-Guduru-Wollega Zones of Oromia Region.


  • Arrests and abductions were recorded in 4 woreda/city administrations across 2 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Raya-Alamata, Lalibela, Enemay and Shebel-Berenta Woredas in North Wollo and East Gojjam Zones. In Raya-Alamata Woreda, abductions were carried out by Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces. An arrest of an opposition political candidate was recorded in Addis-Ababa City.


  • Drone activity was recorded in Jawi, Fagita-Lekoma and Alefa Woredas in Awi and Central Gonder Zones in Amhara Region. Casualties were reported in Jawi and Alefa Woredas.


  • This week, internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Kobo City of North Wollo Zone carried out a public demonstration protesting the occupation of numerous administrations by TPLF forces.
