War updates from Amhara Region, Ethiopia – September 22nd to 28th, 2025

Overview
For the week of September 22nd to 28th, 2025, fighting between the Amhara Fano self-defense force (Fano) and Prosperity Party regime joint forces (regime forces) has continued in various parts of Amhara Region in Ethiopia.
This week battle events and rights violations were recorded in more than 38 woreda/city administrations across 10 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These zones included the North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, North Gojjam, South Gonder, Central Gonder, West Gonder and North Gonder Zones.
This week Fano forces under AFNF initiated Operation Arbegna Adem Ali (Aba Nadew) in northeastern Amhara resulting in the capture of territories and significant casualties sustained by regime losses. Developments were also recorded in East Arsi Zone of Oromia Region.
Civilian casualties were recorded in 7 woreda/city administrations across 4 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Woldia, Gubalafto, Ambassel, Dessie, Wemberima, Farta, and Tach-Gayint Woredas in North Wollo, South Wollo, West Gojjam and South Gonder Zones. Civilian casualties were also recorded in East Arsi Zone of Oromia Region.
Over 14 drone strikes were recorded across Woldia, Gubalafto and Lasta Woredas of North Wollo Zone in Amhara Region. The drone attacks resulted in civilian casualties (including patients and medical personnel), and property damages including structural damage to a health center and a secondary school.
Arbitrary arrests were recorded in Raya-Kobo Woreda of North Wollo Zone and abductions were recorded in Dessie city in South Wollo Zone of Amhara Region. In addition, widespread arrests including of prominent religious figures was reported in Debre-Zeyit city in East Shewa Zone of Oromia Region and arrests were reported in Addis-Ababa city.
Reports indicate Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces affiliated to the Tigrayan settler administration have continued occupying military camps in Alamata city of North Wollo Zone in Amhara Region.
