War updates from Amhara Region, Ethiopia – October 6th to 12th, 2025

Overview


For the week of October 6th to 12th, 2025, fighting between the Amhara Fano self-defense force (Fano) and Prosperity Party regime joint forces (regime forces) has continued in various parts of Amhara Region in Ethiopia.


  • This week battle events and rights violations were recorded in more than 42 woreda/city administrations across 11 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These zones included the North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, North Gojjam, South Gonder, Central Gonder, West Gonder and North Gonder Zones.


    • This week Fano forces announced the completion of Operation Arbegna Adem Ali (Aba Nadew) in northeastern Amhara.3 Developments were also recorded in East Wollega Zone of Oromia Region and Addis-Ababa city.


    • This week the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced a series of humanitarian missions in North Wollo Zone of Amhara Region related to delivery of medical supplies, evacuation of prisoners of war (POWs) and visits to detainees, following a request from Fano forces.


  • Civilian casualties were recorded in 7 woreda/city administrations across 5 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Mersa, Gashena, Dessie, Merhabete, Bahir-Dar-Zuriya, Wegera and Metemma Woredas in North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, North Gojjam, Central Gonder and North Gonder Zones.


  • Arbitrary arrests were reported in Woldia city and Raya-Alamata Woreda of North Wollo Zone in Amhara Region. In Raya-Alamata Woreda, arrests undertaken by Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces targeted religious figures affiliated with the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC). In addition, abductions were recorded in Enemay Woreda of East Gojjam Zone and in Metemma Woreda of West Gonder Zone in Amhara Region. Abductions in Metemma Woreda were attributed to regime-backed Qemant militants.


  • This week, increased military mobilization and road blockages was reported by TPLF forces in Raya-Alamata Woreda and surrounding areas including Korem city and areas bordering Raya-Kobo Woreda. In response, regime forces also made similar military deployments in the area.


  • This week, reports indicated that multiple Amhara political prisoners held in Kilinto Prison in Addis-Ababa city have reportedly faced mistreatment and human rights violations by regime security forces.
