War updates from Amhara Region, Ethiopia – October 20th to 26th, 2025

Overview
For the week of October 20th to 26th, 2025, fighting between the Amhara Fano self-defense force (Fano) and Prosperity Party regime joint forces (regime forces) has continued in various parts of Amhara Region in Ethiopia.
This week battle events and rights violations were recorded in more than 40 woreda/city administrations across 9 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These zones included the North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, North Gojjam, South Gonder and West Gonder Zones. Developments were also recorded in Addis-Ababa city, West Shewa and North Shewa Zones of Oromia Region, and Metekel Zone of Benishangul-Gumuz Region.
Civilian casualties were recorded in 11 woreda/city administrations across 5 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Alamata, Raya-Alamata, Raya-Kobo, Debre-Birhan, Antsokiyana-Gemza, Gonji-Qolela, Bahir-Dar-Zuriya, North Achefer, Lay-Gayint, Guna-Begemidir and Qwara Woredas in North Wollo, North Shewa, North Gojjam, South Gonder and West Gonder Zones. In Alamata city and Raya-Alamata Woreda in North Wollo Zone of Amhara Region, Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces were implicated in attacks on religious leaders with affiliation to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) and theft of EOTC property. Civilian casualties were also reported in Nono Woreda of West Shewa Zone in Oromia Region.
More than 4 drone attacks were recorded resulting in civilian casualties in 4 woreda/city administrations across 3 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Gonji-Qolela, Bahir-Dar-Zuriya, Lay-Gayint and Qwara Woredas of North Gojjam, South Gonder and West Gonder Zones. Drone surveillance activity was also reported in these areas resulting in disturbances to normal activities.
Arbitrary arrests were reported in Alamata, Dejen and Jabi-Tehnan Woredas of North Wollo, East Gojjam and West Gojjam Zones in Amhara Region. In Alamata city of North Wollo Zone, arrests were undertaken by TPLF forces against civilians including religious leader with affiliation to the EOTC. In addition, abductions were undertaken by regime forces in Guagusa-Shikudad Woreda of Awi Zone in Amhara Region.
This week numerous political prisoners including the Honorable Yohannes Buayalew were brought before the Federal Higher Court in Addis-Ababa city. Reports indicated criticisms from legal experts and observers of injustice in the hearing and allegations of gross mistreatment of detainees up to torture by multiple regime security and prison officials.
