War updates from Amhara Region, Ethiopia – May 18th to 24th, 2026

Overview

For the week of May 18th to 24th, 2026, fighting between the Amhara Fano self-defense force (Fano) and Oromo Prosperity Party regime joint forces (regime forces) has continued in various parts of Amhara Region in Ethiopia.

This week battle events and rights violations were recorded in more than 39 woreda/city administrations across 10 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These zones included North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, South Gonder and Central Gonder Zones and Bahir-Dar City. Developments were also recorded in East Wollega and North Shewa Zones of Oromia Region.
Civilian casualties were recorded in 9 woreda/city administrations across 4 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Raya-Kobo, Wadla, Meket, Woldia, Basona-Werana, Bibugn, Sedie, Aneded and Jabi-Tehnan Woredas in North Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam and West Gojjam Zones. Additional casualties were recorded in Were-Jarso Woreda of North Shewa Zone and Kiremu Woreda of East Wollega Zone in Oromia Region.
This week drone activity was recorded in Wegdi, Mojana-Wadera, and Farta Woredas of South Wollo, North Shewa and South Gonder Zones in Amhara Region.
Arrests and/or abductions were recorded in 4 woreda/city administrations across 3 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Alamata, Minjar-Shenkora, Siyadebrina-Wayu and Wemberima Woredas of North Wollo, North Shewa and West Gojjam Zones of Amhara Region. In Siyadebrina-Wayu Woreda of North Shewa Zone arrests targeted civilians accused of familial relation to regime security personnel following a deadly incident of infighting. In Alamata City of North Wollo Zone, abductions were carried out by Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces against minors who were reportedly forcibly conscripted. Additional abductions were conducted by unidentified militants in Were-Jarso Woreda of North Shewa Zone of Oromia Region.
