War updates from Amhara Region, Ethiopia – May 11th to 17th, 2026

Overview


For the week of May 11th to 17th, 2026, fighting between the Amhara Fano self-defense force (Fano) and Oromo Prosperity Party regime joint forces (regime forces) has continued in various parts of Amhara Region in Ethiopia.


  • This week battle events and rights violations were recorded in more than 36 woreda/city administrations across 10 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These zones included North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, South Gonder, Central Gonder, West Gonder and North Gonder Zones. Developments were also recorded in East Wollega, Horo-Guduru-Wollega, West Hararghe and East Shewa Zones of Oromia Region, Metekel Zone of Benishangul-Gumuz Region and Addis-Ababa City.


  • Civilian casualties were recorded in 8 woreda/city administrations across 5 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Kobo, Raya-Kobo, Bugna, Harbu, Quarit, Fagita-Lekoma, East Dembiya and Gonder Woredas in North Wollo, South Wollo, West Gojjam, Awi and Central Gonder Zones. Casualties were also recorded in Kiremu, Gida-Ayana, Abe-Dongoro, Anger-Gutin and Mieso Woredas of East Wollega, Horo-Guduru-Wollega and West Hararghe Zones of Oromia Region, and in Dangur Woreda of Metekel Zone in Benishangul-Gumuz Region.


  • This week drone activity was recorded in Wegdi, Mojana-Wadera, and Farta Woredas of South Wollo, North Shewa and South Gonder Zones in Amhara Region.


  • Arrests and/or abductions were recorded in Quarit Woreda of West Gojjam Zone in Amhara Region. Similar incidences were recorded in Kiremu, Gida-Ayana, Abe-Dongoro, Anger-Gutin Woredas of East Wollega and Horo-Guduru-Wollega Zones of Oromia Region.


  • This week, regime forces announced the graduation of a new batch of peace corps in Addis-Ababa City raising concerns over intensifying repression in the nation’s capital.
