War updates from Amhara Region, Ethiopia – June 29th to July 5th, 2026

Overview


For the week of June 29th to July 5th, 2026, fighting between the Amhara Fano self-defense force (Fano) and Oromo Prosperity Party regime joint forces (regime forces) has continued in various parts of Amhara Region in Ethiopia.


  • This week battle events and rights violations were recorded in more than 28 woreda/city administrations across 10 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These zones included Wag-Hemra, North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, South Gonder, Central Gonder, and North Gonder. Developments were also recorded in East Wollega, Horo-Guduru-Wollega and North Shewa Zones of Oromia Region.


  • Civilian casualties were recorded in Raya-Kobo, Mida-Woremo and West Dembiya Woredas of North Wollo, North Shewa and Central Gonder Zones in Amhara Region. Additional casualties were recorded in Gida-Ayana Woreda of East Wollega Zone in Oromia Region.


  • Abductions were recorded in 6 woreda/city administrations across 3 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Raya-Alamata, Raya-Bala, Ankober, Dejen, Enemay and Shebel-Berenta Woredas of North Wollo, North Shewa and East Gojjam Zones. Abductions in Raya-Alamata and Raya-Bala Woredas of North Wollo Zone were carried out by Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces targeting religious figures affiliated with the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC).


  • This week, aerial strikes were recorded in Tach-Gayint Woreda of South Gonder Zone in Amhara Region. In addition, aerial strikes were recorded in Kiremu, Gida-Ayana and Limu-Gelila Woredas of East Wollega Zone in Oromia Region.


  • This week, telecommunications shutdowns were recorded in East Wollega Zone of Oromia Region.
