War updates from Amhara Region, Ethiopia – June 1st to 7th, 2026

Overview
For the week of June 1st to 7th, 2026, fighting between the Amhara Fano self-defense force (Fano) and Oromo Prosperity Party regime joint forces (regime forces) has continued in various parts of Amhara Region in Ethiopia.
This week battle events and rights violations were recorded in more than 65 woreda/city administrations across 12 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These zones included North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, North Gojjam, Bahir-Dar, South Gonder, Central Gonder, West Gonder and North Gonder Zones. Fano forces conducted a series of offensives across the region under Operation Ansha Sayed targeting regime forces deployed for election-related activities. Developments were also recorded in East Arsi and North Shewa Zones of Oromia Region.
Civilian casualties were recorded in 9 woreda/city administrations across 7 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Hayk, Ambassel, Tarmaber, Enemay, Dembecha-Zuriya, Dangila, South Mecha, South Achefer, and Andabet Woredas in South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, North Gojjam and South Gonder Zones. Additional casualties were recorded in Aseko Woreda of East Arsi Zone in Oromia Region involving attacks on ethnic Amhara followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC).
Drone activity was recorded in Tarmaber, South Mecha and Debre-Tabor City Woredas in North Shewa, North Gojjam and South Gonder Zones of Amhara Region.
Abductions/arrests were recorded in Bahir-Dar City and Gonder City of Central Gonder Zone in Amhara Region.
