War updates from Amhara Region, Ethiopia – July 7th to 13th, 2025

Overview
For the week of July 7th to 13th, 2025, fighting between the Amhara Fano self-defense force (Fano) and Prosperity Party regime joint forces (regime forces) has continued in various parts of Amhara Region in Ethiopia.
This week battle events and rights violations were recorded in more than 36 woreda/city administrations across 11 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These zones included the North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, North Gojjam, South Gonder, Central Gonder, West Gonder, and North Gonder Zones. Developments were also recorded in East Wollega and West Shewa Zones in Oromia Region, Gurage Zone in Central Ethiopia Region and in Addis-Ababa city.
Civilian casualties were recorded in 6 woreda/city administrations across 4 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Raya-Kobo, Habru, Berehet, Wemberima, Dembecha, and Fogera Woredas in North Wollo, North Shewa, West Gojjam and South Gonder Zones.
In Metemma Woreda of West Gonder Zone, an attack by Qemant militants left dozens of residents displaced from their homes.
Civilian casualties were also recorded in Gurage Zone of Central Ethiopia Region and in East Wollega and West Shewa Zones of Oromia Region. Incidents in West Shewa and Gurage Zones implicated Oromia Region Special Forces (OSF) and Qeerro (Oromo ultra-nationalist mobs).
In addition, opposition parties reported an alleged attack on civilians by Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) militants in Dibate Woreda of Metekel Zone (Benishangul-Gumuz Region).
Widespread arrests were recorded in Addis-Ababa city and abductions were recorded in Darge Woreda of Gurage Zone (Central Ethiopia Region) by unidentified militants.
Over 51 defendants under the case file of Dr. Wondwossen Assefa appeared in court in Addis-Ababa city and their case was adjourned.
Tigray Region Forces with ties to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) were implicated in an incursion in Telemt Woreda of North Gonder Zone in Amhara Region.
