Statement of Condolence and Condemnation of Drone Attack Resulting in Civilian Deaths in East Gojjam, South-Central Amhara Region
We are devastated and outraged by the news of an April 17, 2025 (Miyazia 9, 2017 EC) drone bombing that has claimed the lives of dozens of civilians in Gedeb Kebele of Enarj-Enawga Woreda in East Gojjam Zone (Amhara Region, Ethiopia). Our deepest condolences go out to the families and communities affected by this unconscionable act of violence. No justification can absolve the horror of such mass loss of life.
This heinous attack by the armed forces of the Abiy Ahmed-led regime represents not only a profound human tragedy but also a grave violation of international humanitarian principles. The disproportionate use of force, the targeting of densely populated areas, and the failure to safeguard civilian lives are all actions that demand urgent investigation and accountability. The systematic use of drone warfare against Amhara civilians, as documented by our reports and numerous human rights organizations exposes the Abiy regime’s intensified genocidal actions against Amharas. Since the outbreak of the War on Amhara in April 2023, AAA has documented 184 drone attacks targeting civilians.
We call for a thorough, independent investigation into this atrocity, and we urge all responsible parties including drone operators of the Abiy regime to be held to account. The normalization of drone warfare as a tool of extrajudicial violence in the ongoing war on Amhara must be challenged.
In mourning, in solidarity, and in demand for justice—we will not forget.
