FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BBC Investigations Reveal Thousands of Rape Victims in Amhara — FANA Demands Immediate Protection, Investigation, and Accountability

The Federation of Amharas in North America (FANA) is alarmed and heartbroken by recent investigative reporting documenting widespread sexual violence and other grave abuses against civilians in Ethiopia’s Amhara region. BBC-linked investigations and regional outlets report thousands of victims of rape and sexual assault since July 2023, adding to a pattern of drone strikes, extrajudicial killings, forced displacement, and destruction of civilian infrastructure.

“Every survivor represents a life irreparably shattered by violence,” said [Name], President of FANA. “These revelations confirm what Amhara families have been telling the world for years: civilians are being systematically targeted. We demand immediate protection, independent investigations, and accountability for these atrocities.”

Key Findings:

  • 2,697 recorded rape cases in health facilities between July 2023 and May 2025.

  • Many victims are children, facing injuries, unwanted pregnancies, and infectious disease.

  • Documented war crimes include summary executions, attacks on hospitals and ambulances, and destruction of civilian infrastructure.

  • Drone warfare has escalated civilian harm, destroying homes and schools.

FANA’s Demands:

  • Immediate survivor protection and medical/psychosocial support.

  • Independent international investigation into sexual violence and war crimes.

  • Accountability and prosecutions for perpetrators.

  • Suspension of arms and drone transfers linked to civilian harm.

  • Humanitarian access through safe corridors.
