Oromo Prosperity Party regime militants kill a religious figure in Woldia City

The Amhara Association of America (AAA) has learned that on the night of March 12th, 2026 (extending into the early morning hours of March 13th) suspected Oromo Prosperity Party regime militants killed a religious figure in Woldia City (North Wollo Zone, Amhara Region, Ethiopia).

The victim was identified as Meleake Mihret Abba Aynalem Amare (Komos), administrator of the Woldia Debre-Selam Medhanealem Cathedral. According to reports, the militants entered the cathedral compound at night and opened fire on the church administrator who was fatally shot, where he had been conducting religious services. His funeral ceremony was held on March 13th, attended by clergy members, believers, and residents who mourned the loss of the religious father.

The victim Abba Aynalem was widely respected in the community for his dedication to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) and for his moral teachings. According to these sources, during his sermons he had openly urged authorities to end the ongoing bloodshed through peaceful means, emphasizing reconciliation and dialogue. In addition, he repeatedly condemned the atrocities committed against the EOTC. Community members stated that they had previously feared that his outspoken calls for peace might expose him to reprisals from regime forces. Although no official acknowledgment has been made regarding responsibility for the killing, many local residents attributed the incident to regime security forces. In addition, regime forces reportedly detained numerous deacons, clergy members, and other church congregants who were found inside the church on the morning of March 13th. As of the time of publication of this report, the detained individuals were being held at the Woldia 3rd Police Station.

ተጎጂው የወልድያ ደብረ ሰላም መድኃኔዓለም ካቴድራል አስተዳዳሪ መልዓከ ምሕረት አባ አይናለም አማረ (ቆሞስ) ይባላሉ። እንደ ዘገባው ከሆነ ታጣቂዎቹ በምሽት ወደ ካቴድራሉ ቅጥር ግቢ በመግባት ሃይማኖታዊ አገልግሎት ሲያካሂዱ የነበሩትን የቤተክርስቲያኑ አስተዳዳሪ ላይ ተኩስ ከፍተው መትዋቸዋል። የቀብር ስነ ስርአታቸው የተፈፀመው መጋቢት 4 ቀን ሲሆን የሃይማኖት አባቶች፣ ምእመናን እና ነዋሪዎች በተገኙበት በሃይማኖቱ አባት ሞት የተሰማቸውን ሀዘን ገልጸዋል።

ተጎጂው አባ ዓይናለም ለኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ተዋሕዶ ቤተ ክርስቲያን ባሳዩት ቁርጠኝነት እና በሥነ ምግባር አስተምህሮታቸው በማኅበረሰቡ ዘንድ ከፍተኛ ክብር ነበራቸው። እንደ እነዚህ ምንጮች ገለጻ፣ በስብከታቸው ወቅት እየተከሰተ ያለውን የደም መፋሰስ ባለስልጣናት በሰላማዊ መንገድ በውይይተና ዕርቅ እንዲያስቆሙ በግልጽ ሲያሳስቡ ነበር፡፡ በተጨማሪም፣ በኢኦተቤ ላይ የተፈፀመውን ግፍ ደጋግመው ሲያወግዙ ነበር። የማህበረሰቡ አባላት ቀደም ሲል ያቀርቡት የነበረው የሰላም ጥሪ ከአገዛዙ ኃይሎች ለሚሰነዘርባቸው የበቀል እርምጃዎች ሊያጋልጠው እንደሚችል ፈርተው እንደነበር ተናግረዋል። ምንም እንኳን ለግድያው ኃላፊነቱን በይፋ እውቅና ባይሰጥም፣ ብዙ የአካባቢው ነዋሪዎች ድርጊቱን የስርዓቱን የጸጥታ ኃይሎች እንደፈጸሙት ተናግረዋል። በተጨማሪም፣ የአገዛዙ ኃይሎች መጋቢት 13 ቀን ጠዋት በቤተክርስቲያኑ ውስጥ የተገኙ በርካታ ዲያቆናትን፣ የቀሳውስት አባላትን እና ሌሎች የቤተክርስቲያን ምዕመናንን እንደያዙ ተዘግቧል። ይህ ሪፖርት እስከታተመበት ጊዜ ድረስ፣ የታሰሩት ግለሰቦች በወልድያ 3ኛ የፖሊስ ጣቢያ ታስረው ነበር።
