Statement regarding my participation in the 7th round of elections
To the respected residents of Bahir Dar City, to the greater Amhara people, and to my fellow Ethiopians:
Over the past years, having been elected by the proud people of Bahir Dar City to represent you in the House of Peoples’ Representatives, and having served as an honest voice for our people on your behalf, has been a great honor and source of pride for me. I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support, love, respect, and strong trust you have shown me throughout this journey.
At present, as candidate registration for the upcoming 7th national elections is underway, I have repeatedly been asked by my constituents, supporters, and the media whether I will register as a candidate or not. Some political parties had even offered me the opportunity to run as a candidate, whether in Bahir Dar or Addis Ababa, in a location of my choosing. I also gave serious and careful consideration to the option of running independently.
However, I would like to publicly inform my people that I have decided not to present myself as a candidate in the upcoming 7th round of elections. The primary reason for this decision is related to the prevailing objective realities in our country at this time. I have come to understand that there is no conducive environment for conducting free, peaceful, and fair elections, and that remaining in parliament for an additional five years would not provide any meaningful benefit to my people. Therefore, I will continue carrying out my duties as a representative of the Ethiopian people during the remaining few months until the conclusion of the 6th parliamentary term, and I will complete this term of service at the end of June. At a later date, I will communicate how I intend to continue serving my country and my people.
To my family and friends, to the beloved residents of Bahir Dar City, to the Amhara people, and to all my fellow Ethiopians who have stood by me with perseverance until this moment, I extend my deepest gratitude.
May God bless you all, and may He protect our people and our country.
Dessalegn Chanie Dagnew
Member of the House of Peoples’ Representatives
