On December 25, 2025, Mihret Wedajo, commander of the Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) East Amhara Sector – Menelik Command, delivered a wide-ranging public address addressing the state of the Amhara struggle, and the role of regional and continental institutions. Among the key points of his speech, Wedajo sharply condemned the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) for portraying the surrender of Masresha Setie as a peace agreement, describing their actions as an embarrassment that undermines African institutions. He accused both bodies of elevating an opportunistic individual who, he said, played no meaningful role in the struggle, and stated that these actions have led Amhara Fano to lose confidence in continental leadership altogether. Wedajo reaffirmed that the movement’s path forward rests on self-reliance and the will of its own people, while criticizing Ethiopian state media for amplifying what he characterized as a fabricated narrative around the surrender.
Speech Transcript:
To the African Union and IGAD, we are embarrassed by your actions. We have now realized that we have no leaders or institutions.
If you ask us why. We are very ashamed to see you undermine African institutions based on the surrender of the opportunist Masresha Setie.
We are ashamed by your actions. We have asked if these (AU and IGAD) are the institutions that are leading us. We have lost hope in you and have reaffirmed our position that relying on our own strength and our own people is the right path forward for us.
Masresha Setie was sent by the regime to join the struggle over a year after it began. When our allies cornered him on organizational consolidation, he ran back to the regime out of desperation.
For you to take an unreliable person like this and embarrass this respected institution (African Union) has brought us shame.
As Africans, as Ethiopians and as Amhara Fano we have given up on this institution (African Union). We are ashamed of this organization.
We will leave it at that. Since we know Masresha Setie very well, especially as the Menelik Command (AFNF). Nothing surprises us since we know Masresha Setie was a petty thief.
He knows our bravery well from the past let alone now. If he wants to surrender to tarnish our image then let him go ahead.
He has never fired one shot at the enemy. He was hiding from place to place and stealing. It amazed us to see Ethiopian state media (Prosperity Party media) give it so much attention.
We are ashamed by this and we encourage you not to repeat this in the future.
