It has been revealed that Fano forces and Ethiopian state soldiers have carried out fighting in various parts of Amhara Region including yesterday. In the fighting the Fano forces reportedly captured additional territories. According to Communication Service State Minister Kebede Desisa the “extremist” forces were causing mischief but no longer possess capacity to fight in multiple places.

Fano forces in North Wollo Zone

During recent fighting in various areas of Amhara Region Fano forces are said to have taken control of numerous areas. One resident of Checheho, located on the border of South Gonder and North Wollo told Deutsche Welle News that Fano forces had captured Checheho, Zebit, Gergera and Aflaqit and the surrounding area.

In North Wollo Zone alone Fano forces took control of six woreda administrations according to Checheho Division commander Major Mikiyas who spoke to Deutsche Welle News. Yesterday state soldiers attempted to retake control of Muja and Kulmesk located beyond the Tekulesh area of Raya Kobo however they reportedly sustained significant casualties. He said, “the Fano retreated, took strategic positions and routed them [state soldiers] and not a single soldier made it out alive.”

Ministry of Communication Services

When we called the phone of national defense force spokesperson Brigadier General Getinet Adane, he informed us he would not provide any comment unless it came from state communications. According to Communication Service State Minister Kebede Desisa the “extremist” forces were causing mischief but no longer possess capacity to fight in multiple places. He said there was no further matter he could provide details for and said the following to Deutsche Welle. He said, “there is no special information we can share, the extremist group is committing acts of mischief in various places but lacks the ability to engage us in combat, they also lack the organization.”

The current state of battle

Another resident of North Wollo from the Bilbala area in Lasta said their area had long been under control of Fano forces and stated recent fighting did not take place in their area. They said, “it has been peaceful here over the past couple days.”

It has been reported that fighting took place today in an area called Beqilo Maneqiya located just north of Sanqa in North Wollo. We made repeated attempts to call regional communications head Dr. Mengesha Fentaw to discuss the current situation in the region however we did not receive any response to our requests. Deutsche Welle has been unable to independently verify or refute the outcome of recent fighting or the status of areas.
