Denouncement of the Regime-Aligned Faction of Former NaMA Officials
We, the undersigned organizations, hereby issue a resolute and unequivocal condemnation of the recent rhetoric and actions taken by a small group of individuals who illegally call themselves the National Movement of Amhara (NaMA) and have become mouthpieces of Abiy Ahmed and the Oromo Prosperity Party (OPP) regime in the last few years. These individuals are misleading the public by acting as the legitimate voice of the Amhara people.
While the legitimate NaMA played a significant role in awakening and mobilizing the Amhara people during its early years, the party has since been weakened by internal leadership conflicts, particularly following Belete Molla's rise to party leadership. Exploiting these divisions and driven by personal ambition, Belete Molla abandoned NaMA's founding principles in exchange for a cabinet position within the OPP regime. Following his example, no more than a handful of former NaMA members, including current office holders Gashaw Mersha and Yesuf Ibrahim also joined the regime, willingly trading their integrity for positions within its power structure and betraying the original core values of NaMA.
Meanwhile, those who remained faithful to the core ideals of the movement and who refused to be sellouts, have been forced into exile, imprisonment, and armed resistance. Their continued persecution underscores the regime's unwillingness to entertain peaceful dialogue or pursue genuine justice for the Amhara people.
The co-opted faction led by Belete Molla, now functioning as a shameful extension of the regime, consists of individuals who are:
Federal and regional cabinet members who have openly endorsed the war on Amhara in high-level government meetings, thereby facilitating genocidal violence against Amhara communities across Ethiopia.
Officials stationed in the war-torn Amhara Region actively participating in the genocidal campaign against the Amhara people;
Engaged in defamation and relentless attacks against former colleagues who now languish in prison for standing firm in their opposition to the regime.
Warmongering against neighboring countries as puppets of the OPP regime.
Operatives working to consolidate the power of the OPP regime by diverting attention from and weakening the Amhara struggle to end the ongoing genocide, employing tactics aimed at demoralizing Fano freedom fighters and undermining their noble mission to defend the Amhara people.
Thus, let there be no ambiguity:
This faction has not only abandoned the foundations of the Amhara Movement in pursuit of personal gain but has also become an active instrument in advancing agendas hostile to the Amhara people. Their actions promote divisive provincial ideologies that erode unity and undermine the collective strength of the Amhara Movement.
The entity these individuals now claim as NaMA is a hollow shell, a puppet organization lacking both legal standing and moral legitimacy. Its continued operation is sustained not by public support, but by regime manipulation aimed at silencing authentic Amhara voices and suppressing meaningful resistance.
Accordingly, these individuals and their affiliates have no rightful place in any forum that purports to represent the Amhara cause. They must be wholly rejected by all political processes involving the Amhara people.
In closing, we affirm—without hesitation or compromise--that the Amhara people will not recognize, accept, or be bound by any decision, agreement, or statement made by this illegitimate faction. Their betrayal is not only a grave injustice but a direct assault on the spirit, dignity, and perseverance of the Amhara struggle. We remain unwavering in our pursuit of justice and will steadfastly oppose any attempt to dilute, derail, or commodify the cause for which so many have sacrificed.
