War updates from Amhara Region, Ethiopia – March 30th to April 5th, 2026

Overview
For the week of March 30th to April 5th, 2026, fighting between the Amhara Fano self-defense force (Fano) and Oromo Prosperity Party regime joint forces (regime forces) has continued in various parts of Amhara Region in Ethiopia.
This week battle events and rights violations were recorded in more than 40 woreda/city administrations across 11 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These zones included Wag-Hemra, North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi, North Gojjam, South Gonder, Central Gonder and West Gonder Zones. Developments were also recorded in East Wollega and Horo-Guduru-Wollega Zones of Oromia Region and in Addis-Ababa City.
Civilian casualties were recorded in 10 woreda/city administrations across 7 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Raya-Bala, Bugna, Jama, Gishe-Rabel, Gozamin, Aneded, Wemberima, North Mecha, Libo-Kemkem and Estie Woredas in North Wollo, South Wollo, North Shewa, East Gojjam, West Gojjam, North Gojjam and South Gonder Zones. In Libo-Kemkem Woreda of South Gonder Zone, regime soldiers carried out a violent attack on a family including gang rape of a wife and physical beating of a husband in front of their children. In Raya-Bala Woreda of North Wollo Zone, attacks were carried out by Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces against civilians. Casualties were also recorded in Abe-Dongoro Woreda of Horo-Guduru Wollega Zone in Oromia Region.
Arrests and abductions were recorded in Addis-Ababa City. Arrests targeted religious persons affiliated with the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) accused of criticizing recent remarks made by regime-affiliated individuals on state media.
Drone activity and airstrikes were recorded in 5 woreda/city administrations across 4 zonal administrations in Amhara Region. These included Gozamin, Dega-Damot, Jawi, Estie and Dera Woredas of East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi and South Gonder Zones. The strikes resulted in significant civilian casualties and property losses. In addition, strikes were recorded in Limu-Gelila and Abe-Dongoro Woredas of East Wollega and Horo-Guduru-Wollega Zones in Oromia Region.
This week, new legislation allowing elevated jurisdiction of Oromia Region security forces in Addis-Ababa City has prompted widespread criticism from rights groups, lawmakers and other observers.
