An Abergele Woreda official who opted for anonymity said residents of the woreda had died, that many others had been abducted, and that they managed to escape to Sekota on foot.
Following the signing of the Pretoria agreement relative peace had been in Abergele Woreda of Wag Hemra Zone in Amhara Region, however the day before yesterday on Monday morning fighting broke out in the area during which local administrative workers were abducted, and civilian lives were lost said residents.
A local resident who opted for anonymity out of concern for the safety of their family members said the fighting was initiated by TPLF militants working jointly with Agew Shengo militants who operate in the area.
“The people have been hurt by extremist forces. You know there is a group called ‘ADM’ right? There is a terrorist group known as ADM . TPLF and ADM together...” “By ADM do you mean the group known as Agew Shengo?” “Yes...the two worked together to wreak mischief taking control of the town and inflicting casualties. People are still collecting bodies up until now, it has become a matter of collecting bodies.” “Which town have they taken control of?” “Abergele. It has been three days since the attacks began.”
An Abergele Woreda official who asked that their name not be mentioned and that their voice be changed said people died in the woreda, that many others were abducted, and they managed to escape towards Sekota on foot.
“I am now en route to Sekota. It is TPLF, and the Shengo militants who operate in the area. Because their force is small, they have worked with the others who have more force. I was also trapped, but I just arrived as other officials and militants have left.”
The source said fighting in the area had continued but, in this attack, administrative officials were abducted.
“The activity has persisted. Towards the south on the Kobo side, it had continued. And now it has begun in Abergele starting yesterday on Monday. They have taken officials. They are also searching homes.”
Abergele Woreda administrator Ato Neyenu Belay said he was not in the area and was unable to confirm casualties and the identity of the perpetrators due to lack of communication connectivity.
“We have also left. We are in another place. We are currently unable to provide a lot of information. We were unable to reach personnel there when we attempted to call. The phone is not working. What damages are there in the area? What transpired? We have not been able to retrieve this information currently.”
“Who did all of this?” “I am not certain who did it.”
On another side fighting in Abergele Woreda could spread to Tsagibji Woreda according to residents.
“They are currently operating to enter Tsagibji. We are currently in a confrontation with us here. They are not far; they are nearby and will enter. The militias are confronting them. Our militias have fought, and they are confronting them. It is called Chereye. Chereye and Selamgae, a town called Tetsam. They are consolidating in Abergele however they will enter soon. There is also a TPLF group there, the Agew Shengo group have joined them and are working together.
In addition, the fighting was led by Tigrayan militants said residents, when we attempted to seek comment from the Tigray Region Communications Bureau by phone and in writing we did not receive a response, so efforts to obtain a response were not successful. However yesterday the Tigray Region Interim Administration President General Tadesse Werede passed a decision for the Tigray Region Government to return to its position before the war, in violation of the Pretoria agreement meaning it is necessary to investigate the implications of this development.
