Overview
The Amhara Association of America (AAA) has learned since April 2, 2026 peaceful demonstrations took place across dozens of towns in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia amidst several years of consecutive war in the region. Communities across various woreda (district) and zone administrations in the region took to the streets with chants, speeches and displaying banners with messages of civil resistance shared in English and Amharic. The protesters invoked messaging calling for an end to war, international condemnation of the ongoing Amhara Genocide and an end to global support for the Abiy Ahmed led Oromo Prosperity Party (OPP) regime and denounced upcoming national elections planned for June 2026.
