Call for clarification by AU and IGAD regarding the fraudulent peace agreement between AFPO and Ethiopia’s genocidal regime.

AFPO deeply regrets AU and IGAD statements regarding the fraudulent peace agreement between AFPO and a shadow of the Amhara regional government, which dissolved by popular revolution two years ago and has been replaced by Federal military rule.

Both AU and IGAD know very well that no negotiations had ever taken place between AFPO and Ethiopia’s genocidal regime. As recently as three to four weeks ago, AFPO’s chairperson, Eskinder Nega, had told the deputy chairperson of the AU, H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi, that no negotiations had ever taken place between AFPO and the regime, and that there was no intention to do so in the future.

H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi, a new appointee to her position, promised to explore the issue further with her organization and get back to us. We have yet to hear from her.

In lieu of IGAD’s obvious conflict of interest, whose leader, Gebeyehu Werkeneh, is a proud loyalist of Ethiopia’s ruling party, no two way contact has ever taken place between us.  What contact we had were all in multilateral settings.

Ethiopia’s habitually lying genocidal regime has claimed that both the AU and IGAD had mediated the so-called peace negotiation between AFPO and itself. And while the statements issued by the two organizations indeed stress that they had only attended the so-called signing ceremony, which was between an individual with no following and a non-existent regional government, we urge H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi to give a full public account of the AU’s engagement with AFPO.Despite the conflict of interest, IGAD too should do the same.

This fraudulent peace agreement has diminished the possibility of peaceful resolution to the war even more than ever. And while this is in confluence with the delusional plans of the regime, the good name of an esteemed body as that of the AU should not be dragged into it.

We urge the AU and H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi in particular to tell the world the full truth. While lies profit war, truth profits peace.
