Statement – February 11, 2026 (Yekatit 4, 2018 EC)

The Amhara Association of America (AAA) expresses grave concern over use of disproportionate and indiscriminate force endangering civilian populations in densely-populated urban centers in the context of the Abiy Ahmed led Oromo Prosperity Party regime’s genocidal war on Amhara people in the Amhara Region and surrounding areas of Ethiopia.
Starting on the morning of February 11th, AAA received reports of aerial strikes and heavy artillery shelling by regime forces (particularly ENDF) targeting the city center, residential neighbourhoods and suburbs of Debre-Tabor City, administrative center of South Gonder Zone. Based on currently available information, drone strikes were reported in or near Wobaba (near the Tena Science College), Weybila-Maryam, Ayer-Marefiya, Rib River, Qera-Urael Church, and Werqen Kebele. Furthermore, preliminary reports indicate these strikes resulted in significant civilian casualties and destruction to residential houses and public schools. However, the full extent of civilian casualties and property losses could not be verified due to ongoing communications disruptions. AAA also received reports of sweeping arrests targeting local residents under pretext of being Fano sympathizers.
AAA calls on international observers to condemn the regime’s ongoing use of disproportionate force endangering civilian lives and to pressure state officials to enact an immediate cessation of hostilities, respect for human rights, unconditional release of unjustly detained individuals and restoration of communications.
